Each year, the world-class Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (JLCO) records the compositions that are in the Essentially Ellington library so that high school musicians all over the globe can hear what these classic songs sound like in a real context
The full archive of the JLCO’s recordings is being released on all streaming platforms. “Essentially Ellington: The JLCO Recordings, 1999-2025” finds some of jazz’s greatest modern musicians performing the repertoire that constitutes the core of jazz. Featuring performances of compositions and arrangements by Duke Ellington, Benny Carter, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Mary Lou Williams, and many more, this 166-track compendium is an essential document of American music. and a reminder of why the Essentially Ellington program Jazz at Lincoln Centre is so important to jazz education.
(The quality of the recordings is good. It is a pity that soloists are not credited. Duke Ellington always recognised his soloists. Nevertheless, the release of all these recordings is a unique event in jazz history and is a credit to the work of Wynton Marsalis and the JLCO. Obviously, Wynton Marsalis is responsible for many of the trumpet solos. In the earlier recordings, Joe Temperley occupied the LCJO baritone chair for twenty five years).
